Are Newspapers Just Becoming a Waste of Paper?!
Newspapers have been around for as long as it seems as... forever. Maybe since before dinosaurs were extincted. To get the point across, newspapers have been a way for people to receive the news for centuries. The only time I dared going anywhere near The Baltimore Sun, the New York Times, or USAToday was for my sophomore year of high school. My social studies teacher assigned us to do a weekly current event. I figured if I wanted a good grade, I might have to risk the paper cut or two. It was dreadful... I felt like I was going extinct just reading a newspaper.
I feel bad for being so negative on the idea of reading a newspaper. I will admit to stopping and grabbing the Dundalk Eagle from time to time whenever I'm over Rebekah's house just to see whats going on in the community.
The idea of sitting outside on a beautiful Saturday morning, reading the newspaper and drinking a nice cup of coffee seems like a great way of relaxation. For an old person.... Let's face it, newspapers are not what they used to be, we are just becoming way too advance with internet and HD television. The question is how long will they last..? People seem to enjoy getting and reading their local newspaper. We like to know what's going on in just our community and the local newspaper is the best way for that information. But when it comes to worldly news, with a click of a button on our TVs, we can have easy and convenient access. I give the newspaper the next 50 years to survive before its the next to become extinct.
I'd have to agree with you and I addressed some of the same issues you brought up in my own blog. Newspapers are becoming obsolete and a thing of the past. And even though it is refreshing to sit somewhere, relax and read the local newspaper with a cup of tea, you can have the same "relaxing" experience by simply clicking on your TV, or pulling up CNN or MSNBC on the internet. Personally, I don't think newspapers will last the next 50 years; I'd give it about 30 before it becomes extinct.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with your post to a point, I feel that newspapers will still be around long after 50 years. Newspapers are a tradition that people as early as their 30's still enjoy. They are the ones who like to take in the news at their pace, not shoved down their throat at an ever increasing pace, like the cable news. There are so many tickers and side bars that the actual newscast is secondary. Those people in their 30's will get older and still read papers. The generations to follow will as well. Why, because some people want to just take their time.
ReplyDeleteWell i do agree with you from a younger person's stand point. When i was in high school i felt the same, I was pretty ignorant to what was going on around me. Now that i am older my opinion has changed slightly more agree with mike. When your older the paper is so much easier and less stressful. It is nice to slow it down and not need a power cord.
